I have been a writer for almost all my life. I have seen many students committing basic writing mistakes. In this post, I will share with you 4 quick tips that will instantly boost the clarity of your writing. These 4 tricks might seem easy but in fact, it is easier said than done!

1. Make few to no assumptions about your reader’s prior knowledge.

What do the best authors do? They provide context and define the terms they use. They introduce characters at the start of every novel. They reference what happened before launching into the meat of what they have to share. Write as if your reader knows nothing at all!

2. Watch your word choice. Delivery matters almost as much as content does.

Arrogance is an instant turn-off. Your readers often won’t read your article all the way through if the tone is self-righteous or preachy. The posts that get more claps are humble, yet assertive. You lose credibility by using modifiers and exaggerations. Do not input your personal opinions, instead present the facts to your readers and leave it up for them to take a stand.

3. Reduce and eliminate unnecessary words.

If it doesn’t contribute anything to your argument or message, take it out without a second thought. Having multiple words that imply the same meaning often takes away the power of the message. The key here is to keep your message short and sweet while keeping the main essence of your message.

4. Stay focused.

Focus is key. I’m working on this myself. If you’re going to add a tangent, be sure to have a  transition so people can follow your logic and thinking process. Otherwise, consider whether what you’re writing is best expressed in this paragraph or better elaborated in the next.

The next time you are tasked to write, remember the 4 tips above and get ready to score higher grades. It is not going to be easy the first time, but practice makes perfect. Good luck!
